Transfer and Degree-Completion Pathways
How transfer credit, degree-completion programs and 4+1 or 3/2 routes work in accounting, and why remaining credits or time are not the length of the whole degree.
Updated October 26, 2026 · Accounting Degrees editorial team
Many accounting students do not begin as first-time freshmen. They start at a community college, bring credits from another school, or return to finish a degree they left. Programs aimed at these students describe their length in terms that can mislead: "as little as one year" or "20 courses" may describe only the part of the degree left after your credits are applied. This guide explains how to read those numbers and what to verify before relying on a transfer.
Credit transfer is decided by the receiving school
The first rule is that accreditation does not guarantee transfer. NC-SARA's student page quotes a note from the U.S. Department of Education: accreditation does not provide automatic acceptance by an institution of credit earned at another institution, and acceptance of credit is always the prerogative of the receiving institution. Students should contact the receiving institution to determine whether credits are transferable.
In practice, ask for a written credit evaluation before you pay a deposit. It should list which courses were accepted, which count toward the major, which count only as electives and which were not accepted.
Associate degrees: transfer-oriented and applied
Associate degrees come in different types, and the letters alone do not settle how they transfer. An AA or AS is often designed to feed a bachelor's program; an AAS (Associate of Applied Science) is typically career-oriented. Our associate degree listings label each program's track from the college's own wording, and you can filter by transfer or applied. An applied degree is not guaranteed to transfer.
Examples from program pages:
- The University of Alaska Anchorage's AAS in Accounting is a 60-credit degree. Its catalog recommends meeting with an advisor, to select courses for maximum transferability to the Bachelor of Business Administration. The page itself treats transfer as something to plan.
- Strayer University's Associate in Arts in Accounting page says earned credits may be applied toward its Bachelor of Science in Accounting. That is a statement about Strayer's own bachelor's degree; it does not tell you what any other school will accept.
- Florida Institute of Technology's online associate degree page (64 credit hours) says it accepts transfer credits up to 45 credit hours.

Completion programs: remaining credits are not the whole degree
A degree-completion program serves students who already have college credit. Look at what a stated duration assumes. Florida Tech's online Bachelor of Arts in Accounting is listed at 121 credit hours and accepts transfer credits up to 90 credit hours. If all 90 credits applied, the remaining coursework would be much smaller than the whole degree, but the degree is still 121 credits, and only transfer credits that the school accepts and applies to the requirements count. University of Phoenix lists a 120-credit accounting bachelor's, states its typical time to complete as four years from start to finish without transfer or experience credit, and says such credit may shorten it. Walsh College states its Bachelor of Accountancy as "as little as 1 year" without giving the conditions on the page.
When you compare completion programs:
- Find the total credits for the degree, then the maximum transfer credit.
- Treat time, cost and credit figures on a completion page as "after your credits," not as the program's full cost.
- Ask which of your credits satisfy the accounting major, the business core and general education.
- Ask whether there are residency requirements, such as a minimum number of credits taken at the school.
Browse programs aimed at returning students under completion-entry programs. The directory shows duration and credits as the school states them and does not turn a partial figure into a full-degree figure.
Combined and accelerated routes: two awards
Some programs let students start graduate work during the bachelor's degree. They show two awards, and the figures belong to the combination rather than to either degree alone.
- The University of Hawaii at Manoa's 3/2 MAcc is a five-year route for current Shidler accounting undergraduates, who earn a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master of Accounting. Students may take up to 8 credits toward the MAcc as undergraduates and pay undergraduate tuition for them. Admission requires a 3.4 GPA (accounting or overall) and at least two upper-division accounting courses.
- Golden Gate University states that its Path2CPA option lets students earn the Master of Science in Taxation in as little as one year after completing its BS in Accounting. The "one year" counts the master's only, after a completed bachelor's.
- Phoenix describes an MBA Pathway that lets students complete the first three graduate MBA courses during the bachelor's program.
Our combined and accelerated filter groups these routes. They save time only when you meet the admission conditions, and each school sets its own rules.
Transfer, completion and licensure
If you intend to sit for the CPA exam, transfer and accelerated routes add questions. State boards of accountancy set the education requirements; they differ by state and have been revised in recent years. A board may evaluate credits by type, level and institution rather than by degree title. Share your full transcript and planned program with your board of accountancy and NASBA before relying on any route.
Questions to ask
- What is the total degree length, and how many credits can I transfer?
- Will the school provide a written evaluation first?
- Which accepted credits count toward accounting requirements?
- Does a stated duration assume full-time study and a specific number of transfer credits?
- Is any articulation agreement with my college written down?
